Le ministre du Commerce international du Canada rencontre des Penser localement, agir globalement : Comment la recherche Canada 's nuclear power programme. Although Canada has developed the CANDU type reactor, and has an ambitious programme of nuclear power plant construction, there has been virtually no nuclear controversy.

This progress was seen as a means to bring Canada out of the 'resource cow' era, and onto a more equal footing with technologically elite nations. However the Indian nuclear explosion test, waste storage problems, contamination problems arising from use of uranium ore processing waste as land fill and subsidised sale of nuclear power plants to Argentina and South Korea have initiated public and parliamentary interest.

Some economists have also maintained that Canada is approaching over-supply of nuclear power and over-investment in plant. Canada has no official overall energy production plan and alternative sources have not been evaluated. Fusion Canada 's publication of the National Fusion Program. Wait times in Canada. A significant barrier to accessing healthcare in Canada is long waiting lists, which can be linked to the way that Medicare was structured. After significant pressure, provincial governments began to address wait times.

An example of a successful strategy to reduce wait times for elective surgery is the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative, which saw wait times in the province change from being among the longest in Canada to the shortest. Canada 's radiation scandal? In July , Greenpeace distributed a page treatise entitled ' Canada 's Radiation Scandal' to a wide audience. The bottom line of the Greenpeace critique was that ' Canada 's radiation limits are among the worst in the developed world'.

This is a commentary on the Greenpeace pamphlet from the Atomic Energy Control Board AECB , the body that sets and enforces radiation standards covering the use of nuclear energy in Canadian industry, science and medicine. Uranium in Canada. A major objective of this policy was to ensure that Canadian uranium supplies would be sufficient to meet the needs of Canada 's nuclear power program.

As projections of installed nuclear power growth in Canada over the long term have been successively revised downwards the concern about domestic security of supply is less relevant now than it was 10 years ago and as Canadian uranium supply capabilities have expanded significantly. Canada has maintained its status as the western world's leading exporter of uranium and has become the world's leading producer. Domestic uranium resource estimates have increased to tonnes U recoverable from mineable ore since URAG completed its last formal assessment In , Canada 's five primary uranium producers employed some people at their mining and milling operations, and produced concentrates containing some 11 tU.

A substantial portion of Canada 's identified uranium resources, recoverable within the same price range, is thus surplus to Canadian needs and available for export. Terrorism in Canada. This paper reviews terrorism in Canada , assessing the incidence and nature of terrorist activity, the potential targets of terrorist attacks, risk factors to Canadian nationals and institutions, and the responses of the Canadian government in dealing with the threat and the effectiveness of those responses.

Despite the fact that there have been no recent high-profile terrorist events in Canada , this country has a serious terrorism problem, the key manifestation of which is the multitude of terrorist organizations that have designated Canada as a base of operations.

In addition, Canadians have been attacked overseas and Canadian organizations, both local and abroad, are potential targets of terrorist activity. Canadian attempts to deal with terrorism through foreign and domestic policy have been ineffective, primarily because the policies have been poorly enforced.

Until recently, terrorist organizations legally could raise funds in Canada , in direct contravention of international treaties signed by Canada. It is possible that the ineffectiveness in enforcing the anti-terrorism legislation stems from hope that placating terrorist organizations, and the countries that support them, will prevent Canada from becoming a target.

Unfortunately evidence from other countries has shown this strategy to be ineffective. Pour en savoir plus, consulter la page. Pour en savoir plus, consulter. Garde a l'enfance: Etude sur la remuneration et les conditions de travail dans le domaine de la garde a l'enfance au Canada.

Final Report. Between November and August , a study examined wages and working conditions of child care staff in both licensed group centers and family day care homes in Canada. Three instruments were developed for the study, a short telephone interview for center directors, a follow-up director's questionnaire, and a staff questionnaire.

The study…. Canadian uranium exploration and development efforts in and resulted in a significant increase in estimates of measured uranium resources. New discoveries have more than made up for production during and , and for the elimination of some resources from the overall estimates, due to the sustained upward pressure on production costs and the stagnation of uranium prices in real terms. Canada possesses a large portion of the world's uranium resources that are of current economic interest and remains the major focus of inter-national uranium exploration activity.

Canada has maintained its position as the world's leading producer and exporter of uranium. By the year , Canada 's annual uranium requirements will be about 2 tU. Canada 's known uranium resources are more than sufficient to meet the year fuel requirements of those reactors in Canada that are either in operation now or expected to be in service by the late s.

A substantial portion of Canada 's identified uranium resources is thus surplus to Canadian needs and available for export. Forward domestic and export contract commitments totalled 73 tU and 62 tU, respectively, as of early Canada 's uranium policies. The purpose of this paper is to provide an update on the Canadian Government policies which affect the uranium industry and, where appropriate, to provide some background on the development of these policies. This review is timely because of two recent announcements by the Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources - one concerning the Canadian Government's renewed commitment to maintain the nuclear power option for Canada , and the other concerning some adjustments to Canada 's uranium export policy.

The future of Canada 's nuclear industry was subject to a thorough review by the Canadian Government during This review occurred at a time when environmental issues were attracting increasing attention around the world, and the environmental advantages of nuclear power were becoming increasingly recognised.

The strong support for the nuclear industry in Canada is consistent with the government's long-standing efforts to maintain Canada 's position as a reliable and competitive supplier of uranium. This paper is particularly devoted to an outline of the results of the uranium export policy review. Building Canada : Phase One. The 'Building Canada ' program modelled after the 'Building America' program, aims at increasing energy efficiency and affordability, primarily for single family homes.

The program takes a holistic and whole house view, employing a systems approach and is committed to continuous improvement through testing, evaluation, retesting and novel construction practices. The program's objective is to re-engineer house designs so that builders can take advantage of advanced products and achieve maximum efficiency. Building Canada aims to achieve its objectives through partnership with the housing industry, focusing on increasing energy efficiency while reducing construction time, using and wasting fewer materials, forestalling call backs, and reducing overall costs.

The Building Canada procedures encompass marketing, research of builder's operations, re-engineering mechanical systems, framing components and techniques, moisture control and thermal performance, construction, resolution of problems in re-engineered homes, and discussion of results in demonstration homes.

The program as a whole is built on the feasibility study of a Building Canada program carried out in Nova Scotia and Ontario. Some of the results of this pilot study summarized in this report indicate that the Building Canada is not suitable for use by small builders. Benefits are most likely to be realized by only by builders constructing more than homes annually. Full Text Available Politica crowdfunding este una dintre tehnologiile sociale inovatoare. Antibacterial Au nanostructured surfaces.

We present here a technological platform for engineering Au nanotopographies by templated electrodeposition on antibacterial surfaces. Three different types of nanostructures were fabricated: nanopillars, nanorings and nanonuggets. The nanopillars are the basic structures and are 50 nm in diameter and nm in height. Particular arrangement of the nanopillars in various geometries formed nanorings and nanonuggets.

Flat surfaces, rough substrate surfaces, and various nanostructured surfaces were compared for their abilities to attach and kill bacterial cells. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive bacterial strain responsible for many infections in health care system, was used as the model bacterial strain. It was found that all the Au nanostructures, regardless their shapes, exhibited similar excellent antibacterial properties.

The Interfaith Program for Public Awareness of Nuclear Issues IPPANI is a committee of representatives of religious groups in Toronto, a group of people concerned about the moral and ethical implications of the operation of Canada 's nuclear industry and of its exports to other countries.

Wishing to encourage the Canadian government to enquire into this broad question, the faith groups established IPPANI and assigned to it the task of enhancing their knowledge of the nuclear industry. IPPANI was to develop an effective set of questions to be placed before governments and to promote public discussion so that governments might become more responsive to these issues.

Cluster-to-cluster transformation among Au 6, Au 8 and Au 11 nanoclusters. The conversion process follows a rule that states that the transformation of a small cluster to a large cluster is achieved through an oxidation process with an oxidizing agent H2O2 or with heating, while the conversion of a large cluster to a small one occurs through a reduction process with a reducing agent NaBH4.

This work may provide an alternative approach to the synthesis of novel gold nanoclusters and a further understanding of the structural transformation relationship of gold nanoclusters. The results are presented as a function of the collision centrality and the center of mass energy.

They are compared to the predictions of different parton scattering models and the important role of Nuclear power in Canada. The general approach is to compile large-scale emission estimates under averaged conditions for collective sources and sectors, using data that is available on a sectoral, provincial and national basis. Ideally, continuous emission monitors should be used to develop emissions inventories.

Other needed improvements include additional research on emissions data, and increased support for international negotiations on reporting policies and related methodologies, verification procedures and adjustments. Nuclear regulatory developments in Canada. It starts with the Fukushima accident and the effect on the nuclear sector. It summarises what CNSC has done, what it has learned and their plans going forward. It has made recommendations to IAEA for international enhancements to regulatory procedures.

It outline the activities of Canada 's nuclear power plants, Canada 's uranium projects, deep geological repository and waste management as well as nuclear research in Canada. In Canada 's five uranium producers reported output of concentrate containing a record 12, metric tons of uranium tU , or about one third of total Western world production.

Most of Canada 's uranium output is available for export for peaceful purposes, as domestic requirements represent about 15 percent of production. The six uranium marketers signed new sales contracts for over 11, tU, mostly destined for the United States. Annual exports peaked in at 12, tU, falling back to 10, tU in Forward domestic and export contract commitments were more than 70, tU and 60, tU, respectively, as of early The uranium industry in Canada was restructured and consolidated by merger and acquisition, including the formation of Cameco.

Three uranium projects were also advanced. The Athabasca Basin is the primary target for the discovery of high-grade low-cost uranium deposits. Discovery of new reserves in and did not fully replace the record output over the two-year period. The estimate of overall resources as of January was down by 4 percent from January to a total measured, indicated and inferred of , tU. Spot market prices fell to all-time lows from to mid, and there is little sign of relief.

Canadian uranium production capability could fall below 12, tU before the late s; however, should market conditions warrant output could be increased beyond 15, tU. Canada 's known uranium resources are more than sufficient to meet the year fuel requirements of those reactors in Canada that are now or are expected to be in service by the late s.

There is significant potential for discovering additional uranium resources. Canada 's uranium production is equivalent, in. Canada country report. Nuclear overview: a. Uranium tailings in Canada.

The last few years have produced significant changes in the way uranium tailings are managed in Canada. This is due both to the development of new technology and to changes in regulatory approach. The interrelationships between these two areas are examined with particular attention paid to the long term and the development of close-out criteria. New technological initiatives are examined including dry placement techniques, pit disposal and deep lake disposal. Marketing Canada 's coal.

The theme was Challenges, today and tomorrow and the conference sought to examine the primary problems confronting the world coal industry today: overcapacity, soft demand, depressed prices and intense global competition. Coal production in Canada was presented and its role in the steelmaking and electric power industries evaluated.

A general mood of optimism prevailed. Electric deregulation in Canada. An outline of the electric power deregulation activities across Canada , particularly in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario, was presented. A central element of the restructuring is creation of a power pool which acts as an open spot market, and a transmission administrator that provides access to the generators, distribution companies, importers and exporters.

Load forecasts, average daily load profile and hourly pool prices for TransAlta Corporation were presented as an example. Plugging into Canada. Exports of electricity from Canada to the U. The author considers that the National Energy Board does a good job of protecting Canadian interests. Opposition in the United States comes from within the government or congress rather than from the power industry or public. In particular, they present results on the mean transverse momentum of charged pions, charged kaons, protons and anti-protons and compare with experimental measurements.

In contingency of a nuclear emergency event, requiring application of intervention measures on a federal scale, Canada has of a plan ensuring the compatibility of the plans of different provinces and serving as interface between federal and provincial authorities.

Exclusive of a nuclear attack against North America, by nuclear emergency it is understood an accident resulting in radionuclide release. This is called the Plan of federal intervention in case of nuclear emergency. Should the plan be set in action and if the emergency has repercussions upon the agricultural sector, the sustaining organism will be 'Agriculture and agroalimentaire Canada ' which in case of emergency acts through the channels of the National System of intervention in the agro-alimentary sector SNIUA.

The paper presents the objectives, the principles of organization and operation, the responsibilities and the plans which SNIUA has in its charge to implement in case of emergency. Canada 's reactor exports. A brief sketch of the development of Canada 's nuclear exports is presented and some of the factors which influence the ability to export reactors have been identified.

The competition will be tough. There are few good prospects for immediate export orders in the next two or three years. Nonetheless there are reasonable opportunities for CANDU exports, especially in the mid-to-late s. Such sales could be of great benefit to Canada and could do much to sustain the domestic nuclear industry. Apart from its excellent economic and technical performance, the main attraction of the CANDU seems to be the autonomy it confers on purchasing countries, the effectiveness with which the associated technology can be transferred, and the diversification it offers to countries which wish to reduce their dependence on the major industrial suppliers.

Each sales opportunity is unique, and marketing strategy will have to be tailored to the customer's needs. Over the next decade, the factors susceptible to Canadian government action which are most likely to influence CANDU exports will be the political commitment of the government to those reactor exports, the performance established by the four MWe CANDUs now nearing completion, the continuing successful operation of the nuclear program in Ontario, and the co-ordination of the different components of Canada 's nuclear program AECL, nuclear industry, utilities, and government in putting forth a coherent marketing effort and following through with effective project management.

Energy cascades in Canada. Combining energy uses in a cascade can result in significant overall reductions in fuel requirements. The simplest applications for a cascade are in the recovery of waste heat from existing processes using special boilers or turbines. Specific applications of more-complex energy cascades for Canada are discussed. A combined-cycle plant at a chemical refinery in Ontario is world leader in energy efficiency.

Total-energy systems for commercial buildings, such as one installed in a school in Western Canada , offer attractive energy and operating cost benefits. A cogeneration plant proposed for the National Capital Region, generating electricity as well as steam for district heating, allows the use of a low-grade fossil fuel coal , greatly improves energy-transformation efficiency, and also utilizes an effectively renewable resource municipal garbage.

Despite the widespread availability of equipment and technology of energy cascades, the sale of steam and electricity across plant boundaries presents a barrier. More widespread use of cascades will require increased cooperation among industry, electric utilities and the various levels of government if Canada is to realize the high levels of energy efficiency potential available.

Environmental performance reviews: Canada. It finds that while Canada has made satisfactory progress since , there are still significant challenges, and the report makes specific recommendations for more use of economic instruments and use of the polluter and user pays principles, rationalising water governance, strengthening nature protection, reducing energy intensity, implementing climate change policies, reviewing environmentally related taxes, and implementing marine and aid commitments.

Most direct subsidisation of the fossil fuel supply industries upstream oil, gas and coal has been reduced. The report recommends subsidies to the mining industry for exploration should also be phased out. Recent measurements indicate emissions of mercury are increasing, mainly due to long-range transboundary air pollution from coal-burning plants. Canada 's Global Partnership Program. At the Kananaskis Summit in June , G8 Leaders committed to prevent terrorists, or those that harbour them, from acquiring or developing biological weapons and related materials, equipment and technology.

To this end, Canada 's Global Partnership Program is investing heavily in biological non-proliferation activities in countries of the former Soviet Union. A comprehensive strategy has been developed to help improve biological safety biosafety and biological security biosecurity with provision for addressing dual-use concerns. Raising awareness and creating a self-sustaining culture of biosecurity is a key driver of the program. In addition to biosafety and biosecurity, the GPP supports a broad range of Biological Non-Proliferation projects and initiatives, including dozens of projects aimed at redirecting former biological weapons scientists.

Pipelines to eastern Canada. This presentation focused on four main topics: 1 the existing path of pipelines to eastern Canada , 2 the Chicago hub, 3 transport alternatives, and 4 the Vector Pipeline' expansion plans. In the eastern Canadian market, Trans Canada Pipelines dominates 96 per cent of the market share and is effectively immune to expansion costs.

Issues regarding the attractiveness of the Chicago hub were addressed. One attractive feature is that the Chicago hub has access to multiple supply basins including western Canada , the Gulf Coast, the mid-continent, and the Rockies. Regarding Vector Pipelines' future plans, the company proposes to construct miles of pipeline from Joliet, Illinois to Dawn, Ontario.

Project description included discussion of some of the perceived advantages of this route, namely, extensive storage in Michigan and south-western Ontario, the fact that the proposed pipeline traverses major markets which would mitigate excess capacity concerns, arbitrage opportunities, cost effective expansion capability reducing tolls, and likely lower landed costs in Ontario.

Project schedule, costs, rates and tariffs are also discussed. Face au risque. Reimagining Haj Khalil v. In particular, what would a cause in fact analysis look like if it were informed by the principles of cultural competence? While Canadian courts have emphasized the importance of social context for fair judgment, they have not fully come to grips with the implications of social context for judicial decision-making.

This is particularly the case within negligence law which remains vexed by the need to maintain an objective standard while simultaneously recognizing the importance of context and circumstance to particular claims. Transnational surrogacy: Canada 's contradictions. Transnational commercial surrogacy represents a form of medical tourism undertaken by intended parents who seek to hire women in other countries, increasingly often in the global South, as surrogates.

While much of the scholarly literature focuses on the conditions of surrogacy within host countries, such as India, there has been limited analysis of transnational surrogacy focused upon origin countries. The Canadian case demonstrates clear contradictions between the legislation and policy that is enacted domestically to prohibit commercial surrogacy within Canada and legislation and policy that implicitly sanctions commercial surrogacy through the straightforward provision of citizenship for children born of such arrangements abroad.

The ethical underpinnings of Canada 's domestic prohibition of commercial surrogacy, which is presumed to exploit women and children and to impede gender equality, are violated in Canada 's bureaucratic willingness to accept children born of transnational commercial surrogacy as citizens. Thus, the ethical discourses apply only to Canadian citizens within Canadian geography. The failure of the Canadian government to hold Canadian citizens who participate in transnational commercial surrogacy to the normative imperatives that prohibit the practice within the country, or to undertake a more nuanced, and necessarily controversial, discussion of commercial surrogacy reinforces transnational disparities in terms of whose bodies may be commodified as a measure of gendered inequality.

Canada and international financial institutions. International financial institutions, such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Bank for International Settlements, are important players in the global financial system. This article provides an overview of the major international financial institutions to which Canada belongs. The paper highlights their activities and the nature of Canada 's involvement, including that of the Bank of Canada.

Recent initiatives coming out of the Halifax and Lyon Summits to improve the eff Assisted Dying in Canada. This paper makes an affirmative ethical case in favour of the decriminalization of assisted dying in Canada.

It then proceeds to defending the affirmative case against various slippery-slope arguments that are typically deployed by opponents of assisted dying. Finally, a recent case of questionable professional conduct by anti-euthanasia campaigners cum academics is flagged as a warning to all of us not to permit the quality of the professional debate to deteriorate unacceptably, despite the personal emotional investments involved on all sides of the debate.

Energy utilization in Canada. The situation of the energy supply of Canada is characterized by its geographic location and by the dispersal of the energy consumers over a wide area. At present, the energy supply leaving the successful CANDU nuclear energy programme out of account, is based mainly on crude oil, natural gas, and electricity as well as on coal imported from the USA.

The targets of Canadian enery policies and energy research are stated as follows: a Reducing and optimizing energy consumption, b introducing district heating, and c utilizing the extensive local coal deposits. GG [de. Nutrition inequities in Canada. In Canada , increased morbidity and shorter life expectancy have been found among those with lower incomes and lower levels of education, but there has been little examination of socioeconomic variation in food and nutrient intake.

Using data from the Canadian Community Health Survey, we examined the relationship between household income and education level and adults' and children's intakes of energy, fibre, micronutrients, and number of servings consumed of food groups from Canada 's Food Guide.

To explore the public health significance of observed associations, we estimated the prevalence of inadequacy for selected nutrients for adults, stratifying by household income, education level, and sex. We found that a higher household income adequacy and or higher levels of education were associated with increased consumption of milk and alternatives, and vegetables and fruit, and significantly higher vitamin, mineral, and fibre intakes among both adults and children.

The prevalence of inadequate nutrient intakes among adults was higher among adults with the lowest level of income adequacy or educational attainment, compared with others. Our results suggest that the nutritional quality of Canadians' food intakes is, in part, a function of their social position. The impact of policy and program interventions needs to be examined across socioeconomic strata to ensure that actions reduce rather than exacerbate nutrition inequities.

Canada 's historical energy consumption, its current consumption and its likely requirements by the turn of the century are reviewed. Both non-renewable and renewable energy resources are examined in the light of these future energy requirements and the need to substitute alternative energy sources for conventional oil in various end uses.

The comparative risks involved in energy production are also reviewed. Most of the increase in energy consumption and the substitution of oil over the next 20 years is likely to be met by conventional energy sources, since indigenous reserves are extensive and the relevant technologies well-established.

Coal, nuclear and hydro reserves could cover the increase in energy demand until well into the next century, and natural gas reserves are sufficient to bridge the gap during conversion from oil to other energy sources. Nuclear power using advanced fuel cycles and oil from tar sands offer Canada long-term security. The penetration of unconventional energy sources is likely to be relatively small during the next 20 years. However, the most promising may become significant in the next century. Wheeling in Canada.

The quest for economic efficiency, or lowest cost, in the electricity supply industry is furthered by trading between high and low cost utilities, one aspect being transporting or wheeling power through the transmission system of a third party.

Some of the pressures and constraints limiting wheeling are discussed. A simple formula is presented for determining whether trading and wheeling are worthwhile. It is demonstrated for assumed capital and operating cost levels, the viability of nine cases where bulk power or economy energy would need to be wheeled across provincial boundaries in order to reach potential buyers. Wheeling in Canada is different from the situation in the USA, due to large distances spanned by Canadian utilities and because most are provincial crown corporations, with different territorial interests and profit motivations than investor-owned utilities.

Most trading in electricity has been between contiguous neighbours, for mutual advantage. New technology allows power transmission over distances of up to miles, and the economics of Canada 's electrical supply could be improved, with means including access to low cost coal of Alberta, and remote hydro in British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and Labrador. Nuclear plants could be located anywhere but suffer from an unfriendly public attitude.

A bridge across the Prairies appears uneconomic due to cost of transmission, and also due to low valuation given to Alberta coal. Canada 's Clean Air Act. This paper provided an outline of Canada 's Clean Air Act and examined some of the regulatory changes that will occur as a result of its implementation.

The Act is being introduced to strengthen the legislative basis for taking action on reducing air pollution and GHGs, and will allow the government to regulate both indoor and outdoor air pollutants and GHGs. The Act will require the Ministers of the Environment and Health to establish national air quality objectives, as well as to monitor and report on their attainment. The Canadian Environmental Protection Act will be amended to enable the government to regulate the blending of fuels and their components.

The Motor Vehicle Fuel Consumption Standards Act will also be amended to enhance the government's authority to regulate vehicle fuel efficiency. The Energy Efficiency Act will also be expanded to allow the government to set energy efficiency standards and labelling requirements for a wider range of consumer and commercial products. The Act will commit to short, medium and long-term industrial air pollution targets.

Regulations will be proposed for emissions from industry; on-road and off-road vehicles and engines; and consumer and commercial products. It was concluded that the Government of Canada will continue to consult with provinces, territories, industries and Canadians to set and reach targets for the reduction of both indoor and outdoor air pollutants and GHG emissions. De plus, les Articles de revue. Zaman Talukder : L'autonomisation des femmes au moyen de la Their scaling properties as a function of incident energy and atomic number Z are used to distinguish and characterize the emissions in i peripheral collisions at the projectile and target rapidities, and in ii central and iii peripheral collisions near mid-rapidity.

The importance of dynamical effects is evident in all three cases and their origin is discussed. The study of flow can provide information on the initial state dynamics and the degree of equilibration attained in heavy-ion collisions. The systematic dependence of flow on pseudorapidity, transverse momentum, centrality and energy is discussed.

Canada 's steps towards nuclear power. This paper describes the policy development of nuclear power in Canada. Canada has a natural abundance of coal, oil, natural gas, water power and uranium. It was recognized that the demand for nuclear power would only materialize if it met an economically competitive range. Radioactive waste management in Canada. Canadian publications from outside contractors concerning the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program are included in addition to Atomic Energy of Canada Limited reports and papers.

Full Text Available Traditional financial planning is based on a fundamental rule of thumb: Aim to save enough for retirement to replace 80 per cent of your pre-retirement income with income from pensions and assets. Millions of Canadians follow this formula. Yet, there is no guarantee this approach is consistent with a savings plan that will allow them to experience their optimal standard of living — given their income — throughout their working lives.

Consumption smoothing happens when a consumer projects her income and her non-discretionary expenses such as mortgage payments all the way up until the end of her life, and is able to determine her household discretionary spending power over time, to achieve the smoothest living standard path possible without going into debt.

Consumption smoothing allows that to happen. But while it is conceptually straightforward, consumption smoothing requires the use of advanced numerical techniques. This free, secure and confidential online tool will allow Canadian families to safely and securely enter their earnings and other financial resources and will calculate for them how much they can spend and how much they should save in order to maintain their lifestyle from now until they die, without going into debt.

It will also calculate how much life insurance they should buy, to ensure that household living standards are not affected after a family member dies. Metastable domains of fluctuating topological charges can change the chirality of quarks and induce local parity violation in quantum chromodynamics.

This can lead to observable charge separation along the direction of the strong magnetic field produced by spectator protons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, a phenomenon called the chiral magnetic effect CME. In heavy-ion collisions, the magnetic field direction and event plane angle are correlated, thus the CME and the v2-induced background are entangled. In this report, we present two studies from STAR to shed further lights on the background issue.

Energy in Canada This publication provides a panoramic overview of Canada 's energy situation at the beginning of the 21st century, presenting the issues that drive the country's energy policy, and a look at the various technologies by which energy is produced, its sources, transformation and the infrastructure required to deliver it to the consumer.

Energy consumption by sectors of the economy, energy conservation and energy conservation issues are analyzed, and details of the lines of actions designed by the federal government to achieve its energy policy objectives are explained.

Tritium activities in Canada. Canadian tritium activites comprise three major interests: utilites, light manufacturers, and fusion. There are two light manufacturers, two primary tritium research facilities at AECL Chalk River and Ontario Hydro Technologies , and a number of industry and universities involved in design, construction, and general support of the other tritium activities.

The largest tritum program is in support of the CANDU reactors, which generate tritium in the heavy water as a by-product of normal operation. Currently, there are about 12 kg of tritium locked up in the heavy water coolant and moderator of these reactors. The fusion work is complementary to the light manufacturing, and is concerned with tritium handling for the ITER program.

This included design, development and application of technologies related to Isotope Separation, tritium handling, tritiated gas separation, tritium-materials interaction, and plasma fueling. Canada is a high-income country with a population of 33 million people. Its economic performance has been solid despite the recession that began in Life expectancy in Canada continues to rise and is high compared with most OECD countries; however, infant and maternal mortality rates tend to be worse than in countries such as Australia, France and Sweden.

Most public revenues for health are used to provide universal medicare medically necessary hospital and physician services that are free at the point of service for residents and to subsidise the costs of outpatient prescription drugs and long-term care.

Health care costs continue to grow at a faster rate than the economy and government revenue, largely driven by spending on prescription drugs. In the last five years, however, growth rates in pharmaceutical spending have been matched by hospital spending and overtaken by physician spending, mainly due to increased provider remuneration. The governance, organization and delivery of health services is highly decentralized, with the provinces and territories responsible for administering medicare and planning health services.

In the last ten years there have been no major pan-Canadian health reform initiatives but individual provinces and territories have focused on reorganizing or fine tuning their regional health systems and improving the quality, timeliness and patient experience of primary, acute and chronic care. The medicare system has been effective in providing Canadians with financial protection against hospital and physician costs.

However, the narrow scope of services covered under medicare has produced important gaps in coverage and equitable access may be a challenge in these areas. The Norwegian interest in Canada has grown strongly the last years and Norwegian companies have invested over 20 billion NOK there. Canada is the perfect gateway to the large markets in the USA. Norway is currently Canada 's 15th largest trading partner. In addition to low costs and strategic location, Canada has the most highly educated workforce in the world.

There is even a Norwegian company in Canada that exports per cent of its products across the border to the USA. Furthermore, Canadian companies concentrating on research and education are given a generous tax credit. The basic information about the reaction dynamics comes from the hadronic distribution. The proton rapidity distribution shows significantly increased stopping compared to lighter systems, implying the formation of a state of high baryon density. Unlike reactions at this energy induced by lighter heavy ions, at low m t - m 0 the proton invariant spectra deviate from a single exponential shape and become fear,.

The inverse slope parameter increases faster for particles of larger mass as the number of participants in the reaction increases, an indication of increased effect of radial expansion in central collision. Anti-proton Needs have been measured recently, and unfortunately a comparison among current results from different experiments indicates discrepancy. Wellons Canada energy systems.

Wellons Canada is a British Columbia-based company that specializes in the manufacture and installation of lumber drying and energy conversion equipment. This brochure provided details of the Wellons energy system designed for oriented strand board OSB plants. The brochure outlined the system's scope of supply, and provided illustrations of system procedures from the initial wet fuel bin through to the electric precipitator used for air clean-up.

During the process, fuel was conveyed from the bin to metering bins into combustors and through a cyclo-blast cell. Forced draft fan systems were then used to provide primary and secondary combustion air. Radiant heaters were then used. A drop-out chamber was supplied to allow for complete combustion of fuel particles and to provide a drop-out of ash. A fan was then used to deliver diluent air to maintain the set point temperature in the hot gas stream.

Refractory lined hot gas ducts were used to deliver heat to the dryers. Hot gas was then drawn through a multi-cyclone collector for ash removal. Electrostatic precipitators were used to clean up emissions on a continuous operating basis. An automatic system was used to collect ash from the combustion system grates and other areas.

Details of installation services provided by the company were also included. Y trouve-t-il son compte? From the humanist and ecological Republic wished for by President Ratsiraka to the rapid and sustainable development advocated by Marc Ravalomanana, the question of development, major for Madagascar, classified among the Highly Indebted Poor Countries, is henceforth linked to environmental concerns.

The constant change at the heart relations oh dominationContemporary societies are experiencing growing inequalities in wealth and access to power. It is, indeed, located at the joint between the major policy decisions and changes in social spheres. But this process acts also by the constant renewal of its various components: proceeding by successive experiments, it ensures the perpetuation of relations of domination, at the heart of economic and professional spheres.

To show the relevance of this approach, the paper develops, following the achievements of the sociology of work, a model to analyze the managerial will of change. Applying this model to a wide range of advanced professional contexts, we point out and explain the effects of social polarization generated by this will.

In Morocco, we should think of desalinization with renewable energies solar, wind and the use of this water mainly in coastal areas where climate, land quality, sun and wind are adequate to these projects. To anticipate the future of food security of the country, attention should be given to the use of readily available resources to overcome the structural deficit in wheat starch and animal protein. The study suggests the use of other starch sources that Morocco can produce easily such as potato.

For animal protein, we suggest fisheries resources which are still underused by the population. Synthesis of ultrathin face -centered-cubic Au Pt and Au Pd core-shell nanoplates from hexagonal-close-packed Au square sheets. The synthesis of ultrathin face -centered-cubic fcc Au Pt rhombic nanoplates is reported through the epitaxial growth of Pt on hexagonal-close-packed hcp Au square sheets Au SSs.

The Pt-layer growth results in a hcp-to-fcc phase transformation of the Au SSs under ambient conditions. Interestingly, the obtained fcc Au Pt rhombic nanoplates demonstrate a unique f orientation with the same atomic arrangement extending from the Au core to the Pt shell.

Importantly, this method can be extended to the epitaxial growth of Pd on hcp Au SSs, resulting in the unprecedented formation of fcc Au Pd rhombic nanoplates with f orientation. Additionally, a small amount of fcc f-oriented Au Pt and Au Pd square nanoplates are obtained with the Au Pt and Au Pd rhombic nanoplates, respectively. We believe that these findings will shed new light on the synthesis of novel noble bimetallic nanostructures.

A phase transformation from hexagonal close-packed hcp to face -centered cubic fcc is observed upon coating the hcp Au square sheets with Pt or Pd under ambient conditions. The prepared fcc Au Pt and Au Pd rhombic nanoplates demonstrate unique f orientation picture shows a typical fcc Au Pt rhombic nanoplate.

KGaA, Weinheim. Nowadays, companies are implementing organizational change in order to be able to adapt to an increasingly competitive environment. Because of this context, firms are often confronted with problems linked to stressful situations that they themselves have brought about.

We explored the policies which were applied by one of the branches of the Essilor Group in an organizational change context. First, we quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed the effects which this policy has had on stress-related issues. Second, we looked at how Essilor-Dijon took into account these effects in managing its staff so as to improve their well-being at work. Our results show that emotions appear to be at the heart of managing change and can either be obstacles or facilitators, depending on the choices made by management.

The progressive increase in the international demand for cereals and leguminous plants for human and animal consumption has motivated a continuous expansion in the cultivated land in Brazil.

This expansion is encouraged by the interest of multinationals of the agro-alimental sector that have made large investments in the country, and by the aid provided by the government to promote and reassert the agro-exporters activities. This progression has gone as far as the cerrado latitudes and, most recently, in the Amazonia, where it has generated profound transformations in the organization of the area and given new roles to different places.

Mountain forests produce a large number of ecosystem services that are going to be affected by climate change. We are expecting an increase in high altitude species that could result in the decrease in resinous and subalpine species. These changes in species could adversely affect biodiversity and timber production.

However, we also observe an increase in productivity that favours the production of energy wood and, at least temporarily, timber, as well as carbon. The first difficulty to get over in the international negotiation on the climatic change, has been and still remain the distribution of the efforts and the research of the equity in the objective determination. This paper aims to show that facing the different interests of each countries, a single rule of differentiation is not possible. The first part is a review of the different charts of the objectives differentiation discussed or proposed in the international negotiation process on the greenhouse effect.

It aims to find a bond between the the charts and the equity. The second part proposes the quantification of a scenario of the emission licenses attribution for for all the world countries.

Guidebook for territories' support in the analysis of their socio-economical vulnerability to climate change; Guide d'accompagnement des territoires pour l'analyse de leur vulnerabilite socio-economique au changement climatique. The work of the inter-ministerial group 'Impacts of Climate Change, Adaptation and Associated Costs for France', which met between March and October , led to a sector-based assessment of all climate change related impacts and of associated adaptation measures.

The aim was to obtain quantified elements that could underpin public policy decision-making and especially development of the National Adaptation Plan. While the sectoral analyses focused on quantifying the costs of adaptation, the approach of the 'Territories' group, co-steered by the Datar regional development delegation and Ademe agency for energy management and environment , addressed the subject of interactions between players and activities, both spatial sharing of resources between different uses, etc.

It was in this context that the SOeS proposed a methodology for diagnosis of the socio-economic vulnerability of a given sub-national territory in the face of climate change. This document provides a broad-brush outline of the accompanying guidelines developed by Sogreah Consultants SAS for use by local players.

A three step approach is followed to draw up the vulnerability profile of a territory: 1 - characterising the territory by the identification of the priority activities and physical features; 2 - using the analysis tools to produce a matrix of indices of vulnerability to climate change per hazard; 3 - drawing up an initial vulnerability profile by bringing together the information from the matrix and that from feedback, either by activity or group of activities, or by environment, depending on aims.

The profile leads to identification of the important issues as well as allowing identification of potential impacts to be studied in more depth. Guidelines were tested in three pilot territories facing different climate change issues: Wateringues, in the Nord. Perceptions locales de la manifestation des changements UD cluster 1 cluster 2. A parallel is set between the development issues at the international level of negotiations between States, and poverty alleviation at the local community level. In both cases, the discussions stem from an essential moral principle, but also as a requisite for consensus and thus a condition of success of climate change policies to combat Climate Change.

The issue of equity brings also forward the necessary modification of consumption patterns, into more frugal modes. Quelle adaptation de notre agriculture au changement climatique? Full Text Available Agriculture is the result of a balance between soil, climate, plants and cropping techniques applied by the farmers.

Once one of those elements, in this case the climate, is perceptibly modified in a sustainable way, it is important that the other elements are also modified to respect the balance. To adapt to climate change farmers can modify their strategic or tactic decisions. But the very first point is to have good ideas of what are to be expected in terms of climate modifications and their agronomic consequences: acceleration of crop cycles, increase of summer droughts and increase in inter-season and inter-annual variability.

Concerning strategic choices, one must not expect revolution and climate change will not deeply modify cropping systems. Yet rainfed crops will be more difficult in the south while summer crops and crop successions will become easier in the north. Escape strategies in terms of crop and genotype choices could be advantageous. An important point of discussion is about sowing dates.

If they could theoretically be advanced for summer crops, the soil water status may not be adequate for allowing farmers to enter fields with heavy machines. It is also because of soil dryness that winter crops sowing should be delayed. Objectif : les zones cruciales au regard des changements climatiques. La formulation adimensionnelle a p Study of helium diffusion, implanted at a cyclotron, in face -centered cubic metals: Au , Ag and Al. Helium in metals is produced by nuclear reactions of energetic particles.

Because helium has extremely low solubility in metals, the precipitation in the form of filled bubbles at elevated temperatures occurs, which have detrimental effects on mechanical properties and may limit the lifetime of structural components.

One typical example is the high temperature embrittlement. The nucleation and growth of the bubbles strongly depends on the mobility of the helium. This work presents the study of helium diffusion in Au , Ag and Al at temperatures above room temperature. After implantation, the specimens were dropped in a furnace in a UHV-chamber and the diffusion was measured by observing the He-release during linear and isothermal annealings.

The occurence of free diffusion was comparing the dependence of release kinetics on helium concentration, sample thickness, time and heating rate to diffusion theory and is clearly separeted from agglomeration process. The results are compared to self-diffusion and to the diffusion of other gases in these metals. Comparison with theoretical estimates favours the vacancy mechanism for helium diffusion in Au , Ag and Al. A cet effet, plusieurs etudes y ont ete menees. How can we explain the fact that many people choose to shut their eyes to harassment in the workplace?

To answer this question, the article draws on the accounts of workers who provide services to victims of harassment. The proposed analysis is based on a thematic analysis of the withdrawal strategies that can be observed among individuals affected by harassment, witnesses, immediate managers and union officers. Inspired by the psychodynamics of work, the analytical framework presented allows harassment to be examined as a symptom of a socio-organizational dynamic that gives precedence to economistic discourse and the instrumental dimension of work over any other human consideration.

La detection de changement au service de la gestion de catastrophe. In recent times, when we think of major disasters, whether they are natural or a result of our activities, we often think of satellite images of the affected areas.

This comes in part from the media coverage of such events that uses more and more the same data sources that we use to help plan and manage relief efforts. The processing and analysis of satellite images, in such contexts, is of great assistance because of the numerous types of information we can glean from them and the diverse uses we can put them to during the different steps involved in disaster management. To this effect, the various techniques and tools used in remote sensing, that were developed by research teams, analysts and photo interpreters, are used efficiently to help in the rapid treatment and analysis of satellite images as well as the creation of value added cartographic products that are likely to help in relief management.

This paper deals with one of the many technical aspects that is particularly well suited to the analysis of crisis images, change detection. It is easily understandable that the analysis, entailed by the use of satellite images in the context of disaster management, is essentially the comparison of what "was" before the catastrophe with what "is" after it has happened.

In light of this, it seems that change detection is the most appropriate tool to use in such situations, but is this truly the case? To answer this question, we will present the sequence of operations entailed by the use and analysis of satellite images as well as the technical constraints and pitfalls that must be considered as pertains to the context of disaster management and the problems associated with the use of change detection.

We will underline the pertinent conceptual, technical and functional concepts that must be taken into consideration to increase the usability of change detection in disaster management. The oil industry is particularly concerned with the issue of climate change. The implementation of Greenhouse Gases GHG reduction policies can be perceived as an additional environmental constraint for the management of the production chain. It is also represents a first step towards a possible decarbonization of the economy. In the long-term, the fight against global warming calls thus into question the activity level of petroleum companies.

Confronted with this, still uncertain, new environmental deal, some petroleum multinationals adopt proactive behaviors, e. First of all, we present the potential economic impacts of the Kyoto Protocol on oil industry. Then, we conduct a comparative analysis of the 'Kyoto risk' for the five largest multinationals of this sector according to their activities and their geographical implantations.

Then, for the purpose to interpreting proactive strategies of firms such as BP and Shell, we examine various explanations including 'win-win', public image and the response to broad societal needs. This leads us to formalize the proactive behavior as an anticipatory management of carbon contestability, particularly perceptible in financial markets.

Lastly, we try to justify economically investments of companies in the field of alternative energy sources and technologies through the lens of real options theory and by a management of the exhaustible fossil resources. Aliments purs, aliments sain ts, la dimension identitaire des peurs alimentaires au Danemark. Central Au on Au collisions. Alard, J. Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Fd.

France ; Basrak, Z. In nucleus-nucleus collisions the initial relative kinetic energy of target and projectile is available for internal excitation of the interacting system; it is however still not well established to what extent local equilibrium and thermalisation occur.

Local equilibrium is of interest to derive, within the formalism of transport equations and of the equation of state, EOS , general properties of compressed and excited nuclear matter. Such approach describes in relatively simple terms the complex many body interactions occuring within extended baryonic and hadronic or quark matter.

For a basic microscopic understanding it is highly desirable to investigate the elementary in-medium interactions in relation to the free elementary processes. Excitation function measurements of central collisions between the heaviest available nuclei like Au on Au , supply the best ground for such studies: the highest degree of thermalisation and compression is expected for such reactions. The consideration presented here of energy thermalisation and of an expanding system clusterizing at freeze-out in a situation close to the liquid gas phase transition can be of interest to astrophysics as well as to the quark gluon plasma deconfinement studied in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the higher energy regime of CERN and Brookhaven.

Ethics and climate change; Ethique et changement climatique. Faced with climate change what is the position of scientists, of economists and of political decision makers? And the one of philosophers, of moralists, and of theologians? Finally, what is the position of anyone of us? This question of ethical aspect has been rarely tackled in France so far. Prepared after a colloquium held in Paris in , this book combines scientifical, philosophical, moral and theological perspectives accessible to anyone.

Up to 2 Co monolayers ML , a bilayer island growth mode is observed. Annealing studies at K on this system show a smoothing effect of the Co film, and at the same time, segregation of Au atoms. From a local order point of view, the Co grows with an incoherent epitaxy and keeps its own bulk parameters.

The difference observed between the local order analysis and the long range order results is explained in terms of the low dimensions of the diffracting domains. The evolution of film strains, as a function of the Co coverage, shows a marked deviation from the elastic strain theory.

Environmental problems progressively reveal new risks that are said modern risks because they can be dealt with through usual systems of risk assessment and management. If some authorities still deny these risks, it is important to observe new dynamics that are here described as capture of fear and that are giving strong power to those who are able to propose control systems.

These systems can be destructive of many original and creative practices. Sociologist can not be confined in analysis of risk perception, he has to be involved in collective action that try to deal with risks by confronting different collectives and by reorganising them while preserving autonomy.

Plasma facing components of controlled fusion test devices tokamaks are submitted to several constraints irradiation, high temperatures. The erosion physical sputtering and chemical erosion and the hydrogen recycling retention and desorption of these materials influence many plasma parameters and thus affect drastically the tokamak running.

First, we will describe the different plasma-material interactions. It will be pointed out, how erosion and hydrogen recycling are strongly related to both chemical and physical properties of the material. In order to reduce these interactions, we have selected two amorphous hydrogenated materials a-C:H and a-SiC:H , which are known for their good thermal and chemical qualities.

Some samples have been then implanted with lithium ions at different fluences. Our materials have been then irradiated with deuterium ions at low energy. From our results, it is shown that both the lithium implantation and the use of an a - SiC:H substrate can be beneficial in enhancing the hydrogen retention. These results were completed with thermal desorption studies of these materials. Results in good agreement with those described above have been obtained by exposing a - C:H and a - SiC:H samples to the scrape off layer of the tokamak of Varennes TdeV, Canada.

A modelling of hydrogen diffusion under irradiation has been also proposed. Dans l'est de l'Himalaya, l'utilisation des terres change en raison de la croissance To not change would mean to accept the current situation and therefore all its negative values.

Full Text Available The current challenges of the agronomic research and in particular the adaptation of agriculture to climate change, require a very broad disciplinary mobilization. To meet these challenges, which go beyond its disciplinary and territorial organization, the INRA initiated a new system of interdisciplinary piloting of research.

In addition to six disciplinary working groups, this project is made up of an interdisciplinary group including researchers and experts of public institution working with the sector, which has carried out a foresight exercise. By directing the reflection towards a medium-long term future —, this prospective exercise authorizes us to leave the temporal horizon of the negotiation and the dictatorship of emergency.

As the long-term future is neither known nor recognizable, the evolutions are considered as combinations of assumptions expressed in one potential form and its opposite. For the prospective in the LACCAVE program, four strategies of adaptation of viticulture for — were predefined and a collective and pluridisciplinary work made possible the writing of a plausible way of events leading to each strategy. These results will then be used to debate with the actors of the wine sector at various geographical levels, in order to contribute to the development and the consolidation of choices of strategies of adaptation of the vineyards to climate change.

The presentation will focus on this original methodology and its specific implementation. Sea level rise accelerated by climate change is of major concern at international scale since the 's.

Up to 2 Co monolayers ML , a bilayer island growth mode is observed. Annealing studies at K on this system show a smoothing effect of the Co film, and at the same time, segregation of Au atoms. From a local order point of view, the Co grows with an incoherent epitaxy and keeps its own bulk parameters.

The difference observed between the local order analysis and the long range order results is explained in terms of the low dimensions of the diffracting domains. The evolution of film strains, as a function of the Co coverage, shows a marked deviation from the elastic strain theory.

The Au growth study, at R. The Au overlayer adopts a twinned face centred cubic structure on the rough Co film surface. Risk is a central component of modern industrial societies that have organised complex systems to tackle with them.

Famous face recognition, face matching, and extraversion. It has been previously established that extraverts who are skilled at interpersonal interaction perform significantly better than introverts on a face -specific recognition memory task.

In our experiment we further investigate the relationship between extraversion and face recognition, focusing on famous face recognition and face matching. Results indicate that more extraverted individuals perform significantly better on an upright famous face recognition task and show significantly larger face inversion effects. However, our results did not find an effect of extraversion on face matching or inverted famous face recognition.

Joint sciences academies statement: global response to climate change; Declaration commune des Academies des sciences sur la reponse globale au changement climatique. Taking into account that there is now strong evidence that significant global warming is occurring, the Joint Science Academies, urge, by this statement, all nations in the line with the UNFCCC principles, to take prompt action to reduce the causes of climate change, adapt to its impacts and ensure that the issue is included in all relevant national and international strategies.

Some recommendations are also given.

We report the discovery of an unprecedentedly large, 2. F nanocrystal has a core-shell structure containing a truncated octahedral core with bulk face -centered cubic-like arrangement, yet a nanomolecule with a precise number of metal atoms and thiolate ligands. The atom counts in core-shell structure of Au follows the mathematical formula for magic number shells: Au Au 12 Au 42 Au 92 Au 54 , which is further protected by a final shell of Au Au core is protected by three types of staple motifs, namely: 30 bridging, 18 monomeric, and 6 dimeric staple motifs.

Despite the presence of such diverse staple motifs, Au S 84 structure has a chiral pseudo-D 3 symmetry. The core-shell structure can be viewed as nested, concentric polyhedra, containing a total of five forms of Archimedean solids. A comparison between the Au and Au cuboctahedral superatom model in shell-wise growth is illustrated.

F can be synthesized and isolated in high purity in milligram quantities using size exclusion chromatography, as evidenced by mass spectrometry. Electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry independently verifies the X-ray diffraction study based heavy atoms formula, Au S 84 , and establishes the molecular formula with the complete ligands, namely, Au SPh-tBu It is also the smallest gold nanocrystal to exhibit metallic behavior, with a surface plasmon resonance band around nm.

Further bi- face -capping Er atoms between these generate the three dimensional network along a, with tellurium in cavities outlined by augmented trigonal prismatic Er polyhedra.

The strong polar bonding of Er to the electronegative Au and Te leaves Er relatively oxidized, with many of its 5d states falling above the Fermi level and empty. The contradiction with customary representations of structures that highlight rare-earth metal clusters is manifest. The large Er- Au Hamilton overlap population is in accord with the strong bonding between early and late transition metals first noted by Brewer in The relationship of this structure to the more distorted orthorhombic Imm2 structure type of neighboring Dy 7 Ir 2 Te 2 is considered.

Thiolate-protected gold clusters with precisely controlled atomic composition have recently emerged as promising candidates for a variety of applications because of their unique optical, electronic, and catalytic properties. The recent discovery of the Au 44 SR 28 total structure is considered as an interesting finding in terms of the face -centered cubic FCC -like core structure in small gold-thiolate clusters.

A negative thermal expansion was detected for the Au— Au bonds of the metal core the first Au— Au shell and was interpreted based on the unique Au core structure consisting of the Au 4 units. Silva, Dionisio F. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction XRD and the electro-oxidation of ethanol was studied by chronoamperometry at room temperature.

These cameras have been involved in a variety of changes in UK police practices. However, the behaviors of animals when they encounter ambiguous faces of familiar yet novel conspecifics, e.

We found that chimpanzees spent more time looking at novel faces and scanned novel faces more extensively than familiar or intermediate faces. Interestingly, chimpanzees looked at intermediate faces in a manner similar to familiar faces with regards to the fixation duration, fixation count, and saccade length for facial scanning, even though the participant was encountering the intermediate faces for the first time.

We excluded the possibility that subjects merely detected and avoided traces of morphing in the intermediate faces. Biological synthesis of Au nanoparticles using liquefied mash of cassava starch and their functionalization for enhanced hydrolysis of xylan by recombinant xylanase.

Au nanoparticles Au NPs have shown the potential for a variety of applications due to their unique physical and chemical properties. In this study, a facile and affordable method for the synthesis of Au NPs via the liquefied mash of cassava starch has been described and the functionalized Au NPs by L-cysteine improved activity of recombinant xylanase was demonstrated.

UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and zeta potential measurements were performed to characterize the Au NPs and monitor their synthesis. The presence of Au was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy EDX and the X-ray diffraction patterns showed that Au nanocrystals were face -centered cubic.

The presence of C and O in the EDX spectrum and the negative zeta potential of Au NPs suggested that the biomolecules present in liquefied cassava mash were responsible for the stabilization of Au NPs. Moreover, cysteine-functionalized Au NPs could significantly improve recombinant xylanase efficiency and stability.

On cherche donc d'autres solutions.

Controlling the physical and chemical properties of alloy nanoparticles NPs is an important approach to optimize NP catalysis.

Unlike other tuning knobs, such as size, shape, and composition, crystal structure has received limited attention and not been well understood for its role in catalysis. Here, Exemplifying by Au Cu alloy NPs with face centered cubic fcc and face centered tetragonal fct structure, we demonstrate a remarkable difference in phase segregation and catalytic performance depending on the crystal structure.

During the thermal treatment in air, the Cu component in fcc- Au Cu alloy NPs segregates more easily onto the alloy surface as compared to that in fct- Au Cu alloy NPs. Furthermore, the same concept can be extended to other alloy NPs, making it possible to fine-tune NP catalysis for many different chemical reactions.

Endowed with a considerable gas potential, the Middle East will represent an essential source of supply for many industrialized countries and several gas export projects, either by LNG tanker or by pipelines are currently being contemplated.

During the past decade, the contribution of natural gas to the energy mix also grew substantially in most Middle Eastern countries. The increase in gas demand should continue at a sustained rate, mainly driven by the power generation sector, petrochemicals and energy consumption by the hydrocarbons industry.

These promising prospects for gas demand in most of the markets in the region might lead to the development of an intra-regional network. However, although opportunities exist, the region will have to meet many challenges in order to contribute more largely to the world gas balance in the years to come. Ainsi, au cours des.

The factors influencing the evolution of Canada 's nuclear export policy are examined. Initially, nuclear technology was exported to establish an industry in Canada and to share the technology with other countries.

After an increasingly broad range of political and social factors were taken into account and safeguards became the dominant factor. The indirect impacts of the new policy fall into two groups. One consists of the effects of Canada 's leadership in taking a tough stand on safeguards.

The second group of effects involve the concern of other countries about access to secure energy supplies and advanced technology. Radiation oncology in Canada.

Canada 's radiation scandal? In July , Greenpeace distributed a page treatise entitled ' Canada 's Radiation Scandal' to a wide audience. The bottom line of the Greenpeace critique was that ' Canada 's radiation limits are among the worst in the developed world'.

Canada 's domestic nuclear issues.

All this information is much analytical opportunities provided that we can retrieve and interpret.

In this context, is the content of a website can be enough to conduct a study on innovation and commercialization? Websites are sources of information available and accessible to everyone. The majority of companies with a website, the coverage of an Internet-based study is an advantage.

For our research on the commercialization of nanotechnology in Canada , we recover as many data on websites of Canadian companies listed by various sources as having activities in nanotechnology. From these data we cluster companies according to their nanotechnology field using a list of keywords from scientific papers to estimate the level of advancement of Canadian companies in nanotechnology research. Finally thanks to several indicators of innovation and marketing we describe the current state of nanotechnology in the Canadian industry.

These represent only part of French participation in the congress since a total of 16 individuals from France took part in the various sessions.

Their presentations cover very varied topics and are one of the things that testify to the interest that our energy industries have in the works and operations of the WEC. Some other figures also bear witness to this interest: French congress members, which is one of the largest delegations after that of the United States, the host country of the congress; 11 technical presentation, covering a wide range of subjects: from the nuclear reactor of the future to the use of bagasse cane trash for the production of electricity, from the underground storage of natural gas to the production of extra-heavy crude petroleum.

But French participation in the work of the WEC is not limited to congresses. This active French presence is also essential in order to defend the official English-French bilingualism of the World Energy Council. This is a difficult task, one that has to be undertaken anew each time, but one that France and other French-speaking nations have decided to pursue to the end.

Models of vector meson production and the correlation with nuclear breakup are discussed, as well as a fundamental test of quantum mechanics that is possible with the system. Life expectancy, adapted technology and cold climate conditions : key issues for wind turbines in Canada ; Duree de vie, adaptation technologique et conditions froides : un enjeu majeur pour les eoliennes au Canada. Chaumel, J. This presentation discussed the service life of wind turbines, particularly those operating in cold climates. A map of Quebec was included to indicate the potential sites for an additional MW of wind energy capacity for northern Quebec, near James Bay.

Different types of wind turbines were described in terms of their size and power, including those without transformers. It was noted that a 30 per cent growth in the wind power industry is anticipated annually. However, there is currently a lack of wind turbines. It was noted that a gear box lasts less than 15 years and other generator components also require maintenance. The primary reasons for increased risk and cost include equipment failures due to component fatigue, cold weather operation, lack of maintenance and bad design for winter conditions.

The components affected by failures include gearboxes, generators, pitch controls, and hydraulics. Since the industry is relatively new, there are no replacement parts available for these components and cranage costs are high. In addition, since Canada 's entry into the wind industry is also relatively new, there is a lack of machine testing in Canada as well as a lack of understanding of energy capacity and the effects of cold weather.

Overproduction also occurs frequently. In Ireland, broadcasting comes under the control auspices of a government department which is not otherwise related to cultural issues.

While the need to reconcile work and family life has been recognized in discrete ways in legislation and policy over the years, there has not been a substantial shift away from the archetype of the "unencumbered" male worker to a new model of the "normal" worker. In Canada and elsewhere, legislative protection does not allow women or men to effectively reconcile work and family responsibilities over the life cycle. This paper examines the different ways in which work-family balance is regulated, with a focus on the Canadian federal jurisdiction and the province of Quebec, and underlines the need for coherent labor and social policy.

The paper also explores the development of multi-stakeholder initiatives on work-family balance, including the development of voluntary standards and a proposal for a work-family "framework" law to ensure coherence among different laws and programs affecting work-family balance. The paper concludes by confirming the need to move away from an individualized approach toward a more mainstreamed and collectivized approach to work-family balance.

Full Text Available Since the early s, the policies of energy diversification that have been implemented in the industrialized countries and in many developing countries have enabled natural gas to regularly increase its role in the world energy balance. Thus, during the past twenty years, natural gas recorded the highest growth rate among fossil fuels, and its share in the energy market has gradually risen from Today, thanks to favorable economic and environmental factors, natural gas has become the fuel of choice on many markets.

Indeed, gas is blessed with a certain number of favorable assets abundant reserves, flexibility, high-performance uses which give it a major role in all energy demand forecast scenarios. The most spectacular development will indisputably take place in the power generation sector.

Canada 's nuclear export policy.

Final Report. Between November and August , a study examined wages and working conditions of child care staff in both licensed group centers and family day care homes in Canada.

The Toronto Raptors managed to assemble a solid front-court despite losing two centres to free agency. Boucher re-posted a documentary of his journey to his Instagram page, and wrote "Home is Toronto. The eight-year veteran has also played for the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics.

Nerves were rising among Raptors fans after Ibaka left, and then reports surfaced about Gasol's departure. Gasol, who turns 36 in January, is a cerebral, savvy play-maker, and was a key member of Toronto's championship run. Images of the likeable Spaniard guzzling wine while revving up the crowd that choked the streets of Toronto during the celebratory parade will be some of the most memorable from the championship run. The centre suffered a hamstring injury that kept him on the bench for 28 of the Raptors' 64 games this past before COVID shut down the league on March When the league resumed in June, he was noticeably slimmer, but he was never able to replicate his earlier success with Toronto, particularly on the offensive end.

He attempted 3. He shot just 18 per cent from three-point range. Gasol was originally drafted by the Lakers in , but was dealt to Memphis as part of the package that would net them his brother Pau in return. Pau went on to win two championships with the Lakers. Using YouTube videos as a guide and seeds from store-bought produce, Sijo Zachariah and his father began a farm that helped feed twenty neighboring households in India while under lockdown.

Yet, the push may not work, as many of these decisions can be withdrawn or significantly amended by the incoming president when he takes office on Jan. In recent weeks, the White House, State Department and other agencies have been working overtime to produce new policy pronouncements on Iran, Israel, China and elsewhere that aim to lock in Trump's vision for the world.

Some have attracted significant attention while others have flown largely under the radar. And, while Biden could reverse many of them with a stroke of the pen, some will demand the time and attention of his administration when it comes into power with a host of other priorities that perhaps need more urgent attention. The most recent of these moves took place this past week as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made what may be his last visit to Israel as secretary of state and delivered two announcements in support of Israel's claims to territory claimed by the Palestinians.

Biden's team has remained silent about these announcements, but Biden has made clear he supports few, if any, of them and will reverse many as he intends to return to a more traditional policy toward Israel and the Palestinians. As opinion polls started to show Biden as a clear favourite to beat Trump in November, the administration began to move even as the president maintained a public face of defiance and absolute confidence in his reelection.

Some officials point to a July 13 declaration from Pompeo that the United States would now reject virtually all of China's territorial claims in the South Chine Sea, a degree shift from previous administrations' positions that all such claims should be handled by arbitration. One administration official said at the time that decisions made after that would all be taken with an eye toward Biden becoming president.

Thus, the fear that Trump might be a one-term president began to take hold in July and has been followed by an acceleration of pronouncements aimed mainly at thwarting any reversal by Biden. But, even if they are implemented, Biden could reverse them on Day One. Those moves followed numerous other Israel-friendly steps the administration has taken since it came to office. They include recognizing Jerusalem as the capital, moving the U.

While Biden is unlikely to move the embassy back to Tel Aviv, the other measures can be reversed quickly. IRANPompeo and other officials have spoken of a new push for sanctions against Iran, but the fact is that the administration has been ramping up such penalties since Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal two years ago.

New sanctions could potentially target supporters of Iranian-backed militia in Iraq and Afghanistan along with the Shiite Houthi movement in Yemen, which has been involved in a disastrous war with the country's internationally recognized government. Biden has spoken of wanting to rejoin the nuclear accord, and Iranian officials have said they would be willing to come back into compliance with the accord if he does.

Biden could eliminate many of the Trump administration's reimposed sanctions by executive order, but it remains unclear how high a priority it will be for him. The withdrawals could be delayed or slow-rolled by the Pentagon, and it remains unclear how the State Department will handle staffing at its embassies in Baghdad and Kabul, both of which are dependent on U. Pompeo has threatened to close the U.

Embassy in Baghdad unless rocket attacks by Iranian-backed militias against the area in which it's located are halted. However, despite the troop withdrawal determination last week, there has been no announcement about the embassy's status. CHINAAlthough the administration's most strident actions against China began more than a year ago, they have gained momentum since March, when Trump determined that he would at once blame China for the spread of the novel coronavirus and accuse Biden of being soft on Beijing.

It has also moved against the Chinese telecoms giant Huawei and sought restrictions on Chinese social media applications like TikTok and WeChat. Last week, the State Department's policy planning office released a page China policy strategy document. While it contains little in the way of immediate policy recommendations, it advocates for increased support and co-operation with Taiwan.

Indeed, as the document was released, U. The withdrawal, six months after the U. That treaty will expire in February. In recent weeks, however, the administration has eased its stance and said it's willing to consider an extension.

As the transition to the Biden administration approaches, those negotiations remain a work in progress. Matthew Lee, The Associated Press. HONG KONG — Prominent Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong and two other activists were taken into custody Monday after they pleaded guilty to charges related to a demonstration outside police headquarters during anti-government protests last year.

Wong, together with fellow activists Ivan Lam and Agnes Chow, pleaded guilty to charges related to organizing, taking part in and inciting protesters to join an unauthorized protest outside police headquarters last June. The trio were members of the now-disbanded Demosisto political party. They were remanded in custody at a court hearing Monday, and the three are expected to be sentenced on Dec. Those found guilty of taking part in an unlawful assembly could face as long as five years in prison depending on the severity of the offence.

Pro-democracy supporters have said the legal charges are part of a campaign to harass and intimidate them. Lam, who also spoke ahead of the court hearing, said he too was prepared to be jailed. Wong wrote on his Facebook page on Sunday that he and Lam had decided to plead guilty after consulting with their lawyers. The two previously pleaded not guilty to the charges. Chow had already pleaded guilty to charges of inciting others and taking part in the protest.
