Surely cannot hurt… Usually you can expect to get miles on a charge with cart New batteries … proper way to tell age is date codes stamped on top of the battery terminals. Proper way to test is perform a load test on a fully charged battery. I am going to try the rejuvenation procedure on my 8 volt Trojen batteries. When i end up replacing the about half the acid solution with the epson salt solution will this result in a dilluted acid solution when its all said and done?
Also your procedure says to replace the caps after charging back up, is this correct? Jim — You should only need to start with a good table spoon of salt in each battery cell. I have just bought a 5amp floating charger for me set of 6 x 6 volt EVGO cart batteries. How should it be used, if at all? Rodger — Thank you for your inquiry and question…. Pete does not believe in a trickle charger for large batteries or multiple battery banks.
Only good for small batteries like in a lawn mower or motorcycle as the amperage needs to be quite high as in 5 amps to do anything on a battery with a plus Ah capacity Most golf cart batteries are Ah. Over the course of time a trickle charger on big batteries constantly running at 5 amps or higher will dry out the batteries as a pot of boiling water on the stove un-attended would make all the water disappear once converted to steam….
This will allow for good battery health and a proper charge cycle vs a constant charge…. Great advice. Can I leave my golf cart pluged into the lester whilst the cart is not in use? Cheers Rodger. The parasitic drain on the batteries will be very nominal at best so not really an issue. Though leaving the charger plugged into the wall socket AC Power and the Cart for extended periods of time without a surge protected on the AC side leave you and the charger open to disaster should you get a power surge or lightening strike … this can burn up the charger and other cart side components as well.
The way to go these days is the new Lester Summit II Series golf cart battery chargers as they are designed to operate totally independently of human interaction. They can regulate them selves and will turn on and off when needed. This is great for those seasonal residents that want to make sure their electric golf cart stays charged while away for extended periods of time.
So in summary — There is no direct benefit of leaving the older style golf cart chargers plugged in, but no harm to cart if done so if plugged into a surge protector on the AC power side. Only the new style golf cart chargers offer the ability to self regulate and charge batteries over extended periods of time…. I let the cart basically sit for several weeks during knee replacement ReHab. It was connected most of the time to the charger.
When I took it out yesterday it ran for 20 or 30 seconds very good, but then immediately went to less power. On my way back to the house I had to get out and use a golf club to depress the accelerator, eventually seeing the gauge flutter on empty as I pulled back into the garage. Removed cell caps and saw water levels at or below the plates. Filled the cells. Plugged back in and heard gurgling in the first battery as it charged.
Disconnected charger til morning when I put it back on the charger. Battery gage showed positive position after an hour or so on the charger. Heard no more gurgling in battery as before. Tom — The Salt trick cannot hurt to throw some in each battery cell. I would try to fully charge all the batteries. Check voltage after charge complete to confirm they are taking a charge and then perform a load test to check battery health.
Help, I have a Yamaha golf cart with four 12v batteries which are seven years old. I let the water level get low enough that the plates on four or five cells were showing and two terminals were corroded. I cleaned all eight terminals and filled all cells with distilled water. It ran after charging but was weak. I charged and ran four or five times, each time the batteries got stronger.
I have not done a distance test yet. My question is should I add Epson Salt to all the battery cells and if so 1 teaspoon or 1 tablespoon to each cell. This cart is not used for golf. It is used for errands and pleasure on my place in the country. Wallace — Sounds like you got good life out of that set of batteries already if they are in fact 7 years old…. Some batteries you just cannot bring back.
Curious what state are you in and what brand of batteries are in the vehicle? Many thanks, Dick. Dick — Thanks for the inquiry… Attempt to charge , when charge cycle complete then check the resting voltage. Fully Charged batteries will be slightly higher than the advertised voltage of the battery on the battery sticker.
You can purchase a new Hydrometer here. I was wondering if I can put the salt in the battery that is low with out dumping half or the water out of it it 36 volt system and only one battery show low. Hi Pete, thanks for the epsom salt fix, what hydrometer would you recommend? Is there a good better or best. Hi Pete I have 4 12 volt batteries t Three will charge the other will do nothing.
I have tried to individually charge it and tries to trickle charge it. It will not do anything. Any suggestions. If after that much effort — I would just replace it. If the other three 3 batteries are several years old I would recommend replacing all of them.
Due to charging systems inability to know what battery needs what when connected in a series… Ultimately you will create a vicious cycle of unusual battery replacement because some will be overcharging and others will be not getting enough charge. I just tested my Golf Cart batteries 6v my readings range from 6. Can these batteries be saved?
Plenty of useful information here. I am sending it to some friends ans additionally sharing in delicious. I purchased a used club car in March this year. My first one. Old batteries were toast. Owner told me it was 36v cart. No problem right? Well, I went and bought 6 new 6v batteries at the time and replaced the old ones. I hooked up the new ones no problem.
Been driving it for months and had no problems. I am delighted to read this blog. Are you have the same informative blog realted truck battery? Hi Pete: I plan to try this next Spring. How do you know half of the acid has been drained out when you tip the battery over? Great article. My 8 volt batteries are old but do have and keep an 8.
However, the range is less. Will reconditioning improve range? Name Required. Email Required. Reconditioning your old batteries Below is a tutorial which will help you out with reviving old golf cart batteries — to restore them to life! You will need: Battery charger Epsom salts Baking soda and an old paintbrush Distilled water and a turkey baster Step 1: Tip the battery on its edge: Allow approximately half the battery acid to run out of each cell and into a plastic container. Clean the battery with your paintbrush dipped in a baking soda solution.
Rinse your battery with plain water, making certain none of the water gets into any of the cells. Step 2: Mix 8 ounces of Epsom salts into 2 quarts of warm distilled water: Stir thoroughly. Use a turkey baster to fill each battery cell with the Epsom salts solution until the cells are completely covered.
Step 3: Put the battery or batteries on a charger Let them go through the whole cycle or charge overnight. Check the battery after it has charged for several hours or the next day. If the battery has taken a charge, replace the cell caps and use your golf cart for a long ride and see how long the charge lasts. If the ride and power is short lived it is still likely you will need to replace your golf cart battery.
It is also quite possible that your golf cart battery charger is not charging properly. You will need a volt meter to check the power output of your battery charger. Just attach it to the battery bank once the charger has been hooked up to the golf cart and turn it on. The voltage of the golf carts battery bank should jump up from the static state before you turned on the golf cart battery charger.
Make sure you check the water level in your golf cart batteries monthly to make sure they are still saturated. Which is not good because battery acid will eat away at your concrete floor in the garage. In minutes — not an hour or more… weekends are meant to be spent with the family or watching the game not in the garage filling batteries… so get yours today!

He has four tops in eight starts beginning with a T6 at the U. Zalatoris is in a groove as he competes for the third consecutive week. Cantlay has missed one cut in 23 months and is almost certain to be on the first page of the leaderboard throughout the weekend.
Daniel Berger enters the week more rested than he anticipated after a poor back nine on Friday left him one shot on the wrong side of the cut line at TPC Scottsdale. He had only one missed cut in while posting nine top finishes in 17 events before last week. That includes a T5 at Pebble Beach last year.
He might be jet-lagged, but Casey should still should fare well against this field. Former Open champion Francesco Molinari played only seven events last year, missing five cuts while focusing on moving his family from London during the pandemic. He plummeted to th in the world rankings entering but has kicked off the calendar year with a T8 at The American Express and a T10 at the Farmers Insurance Open.
Molinari relocated to California and has clearly rekindled his game. Open at Pebble Beach and he should be a factor over the weekend against a very modest field. Bet with your head, not over it! Gambling Problem? Back to the lab. Gunna get it all clicking at Pebble Beach golf.
That's no bad thing, because Pebble Beach has produced its share of skinners including Ted Potter, Vaughn Taylor and Nick Taylor over the last five years, and it's worth throwing some darts in the hope of another. How much that has to do with the presence of amateurs, it's hard to say. Perhaps this year their absence will reveal itself in some way, and you could even argue it helped Si Woo Kim to not have to engage in small talk with amateurs, in his second language, as he returned to winning ways in a similar event last month.
That might sound a little silly, but both the American Express and this have been dominated by Americans down the years, more so than just about any other pair of tournaments, and it's the best explanation I have.
As for the volatility we've seen here, the multi-course format is a factor, as are changeable weather by the coast and those bumpy poa annua greens, but above all else it represents a drop in intensity and depth following Torrey Pines and Scottsdale, and with Riviera, a World Golf Championship and the return east in the weeks to come. One thing that does tie champions together, though, is tournament form. Since Steve Lowery caused a shock here in , the only player to win without a previous top finish to their name is Brandt Snedeker, who not only had been 21st, but went on to underline his love for the place by capturing the title again two years later.
It's that which leads me away from CT Pan, Doug Ghim and Akshay Bhatia to those with a bit more experience and guile, which could come in especially handy should the forecast wind arrive over the weekend. This of course is a very different event to last week's, from atmosphere to agrostology, and a quick turnaround in fortunes has been fairly common.
Dahmen does have to overcome missed cuts in Phoenix, at Torrey Pines and in the Amex, but he's done something similar before when 12th at the PLAYERS after a poor run and ninth in Texas after shooting a week earlier, and a second-round 65 in Phoenix might be the clue we need that he's in fact not too far away.
LiveUnderPar pic. His ball-striking was good in both rounds at Scottsdale, particularly his approach play, and it was just a horrible first day on the greens which looked to have cost him all chance to make the weekend. In the end he valiantly got within a single shot and Torrey Pines aside his form isn't bad at all, especially as his final three starts of included eighth in a high-class Zozo Championship and 20th in Mexico.
Last year, he was also well down the field in Phoenix before withdrawing and followed that with a run of 14th here , fifth and fifth before the Tour ground to a halt, and there was much more encouragement to be taken from the way he played not just last Friday, but on Thursday too. Hailing from Washington he's well used to poa annua greens and it was quality ball-striking which saw him step up on two good markers to bag that top finish here 12 months ago, as his close friend Taylor won the title.
Hopefully some of the magic can rub off on Dahmen, one of the best maidens around and one good week away from the world's top Rory Sabbatini is another who suffered a missed cut in Phoenix on account of one shocking round and his game is in a good place, but whether the ex-South African has another win in him I'm not so sure.
Though his form here is a mixed bag, Thompson does have finishes of 10th in fifth in Pebble Beach scoring and 19th in to his name. Crucially, with the emphasis on Pebble Beach, where 75 percent of the golf will be played, he also bettered the field average here during a run of missed cuts from to , so it's not the famous host course which has caused him problems and Monterey has in fact been an issue for him more than once.
Speaking of 75 percent, that's exactly the proportion of greens he's hit on all four starts this year and the first three were solid, as he improved upon 25th in the Tournament of Champions to take 21st in the Sony and then fifth, contending to a point on Sunday, in the AmEx. Last week's missed cut shouldn't detract from those performances, especially as Scottsdale doesn't really suit him.
Given he once finished second in a US Open at Olympic Club in San Francisco, has a top-seven finish at Riviera and defied tough conditions to win the Honda Classic, a breezy week at Pebble Beach is much more to his liking and though born in Arizona and raised in Alabama, this excellent putter doesn't seem to stray much from his baseline whether it's bermuda or poa annua he's operating on. That he had a shocker with the putter last week explains his failure to make the weekend, but it tends not to indicate a wider problem and he excelled on the greens when picking up a second PGA Tour title last summer.
He looks to be back at that sort of level now and given that his 10th place two years ago came after a similarly encouraging AmEx, I can see history repeating, especially with a sterner test in his favour. Unlike Thompson, Patton Kizzire's usually excellent putting falls off a cliff on these greens and that's a shame, as his sole previous outing at Pebble Beach saw him respond incredibly well to a first-round 80 to post a Friday 67 at the US Open, a score just two players bettered.
He's playing well most weeks at the moment but with errant driving also an issue, I'm inclined to look elsewhere. This will be Grace's first start since the death of his father, who was struck by Covid I imagine golf tournaments really aren't all that important to him right now and if his mind is elsewhere, as we saw with Justin Thomas on Sunday, he could struggle around and make an early exit.
I'm sure everyone would excuse him for that. Then again, there's always the chance he actually finds inspiration and plays better, but as that's a guessing game my focus is on how well suited he is to this challenge, and the positive signs he showed towards the end of which culminated in a top finish on the European Tour after decent golf in Georgia and Mexico.
No doubt his waywardness off the tee that day rates a worry, but he still would've had every chance to make the weekend had the putter behaved and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. At this best, there can be no doubt that the South African is an ideal type for this - indeed when 20th on debut in this event, only three players beat him over the 36 holes at Pebble Beach.
That event hasn't usually been a portent to success in this one and I prefer to chance him now off the radar, given that he's won a couple of coastal, multi-course events, as well as at Harbour Town and Doha, will love the breeze, and came closest to landing a major championship when contending on the bumpy greens of Chambers Bay in Washington under difficult conditions.
There are many unknowns but his class isn't one of them and Grace shouldn't be underestimated in an event which rates a good fit for him. Of those not yet mentioned, Will Zalatoris and Daniel Berger are among the more viable options at the front. Zalatoris is a Californian stud with an enormous future and played really well for two rounds last week, only for some poor putting and a couple of bad swings to cost him on Sunday. Now into the world's top 50, he's closing in on a Masters invite and is to be respected everywhere, even if this might be more fiddly than he'd like.
The crowd likes this one. As for Berger, his approach play went walkabouts in a high-profile group last week but he tends to bounce back well from what are rare missed cuts these days, and this more demanding test will suit - he said so himself at the Sony. Though we're all used to witnessing his best golf on bermuda greens and generally on the east coast, he's excelled here and if you do want two from the top, he's the one to add.
The crux of the argument back then was that in-form Hubbard loves this tournament and in fact has special ties to Pebble Beach, having proposed to his girlfriend here six years ago and attended college nearby. The latter point explains why he's got more experience of these courses than most and I'm glad Spyglass remains ahead of Monterey, as he says he's played it '40, 50 times' and feels as though he has an advantage over his opponents.
Hubbard has a tournament 66 to his name at Spyglass and though his profile isn't quite as strong this time round, he did lead after round one in Phoenix and explained that a small change to his setup had him feeling good over the ball again. Although a late mistake in round two set him back, a final-round, bogey-free 67 alongside Rory McIlroy ought to have him in good spirits and he said there that the next three weeks were big for him. Ranking fourth in driving accuracy and eighth in greens at the Phoenix Open, with strong approach figures in particular, this quiet improver is just the sort of neat and tidy operator to have contended for this title.
He's preferred to Ryan Armour, another who loves Pebble Beach, and the fact that these players are viable each-way candidates says much about the challenge ahead.
